Achimota School wins Independence Debate |

Achimota Senior High School has been adjudged winners of the 13th edition of the National Independence Day Celebration Schools Debate.
The keenly contested Competition saw Achimota School representing the southern sector, beating their counterparts from Kumasi, Prempeh College who stood for the northern zone with a score of 589 points as against 558 respectively.
Both schools after fiercely battling at their local level sailed through to the finals of the competition.
Achimota School trashed Kpando Senior High School, whiles Prempeh College defeated Tamale Senior High School to qualify for the finals.
The 13th edition of the event was among other activities lined up the Centenary Celebration Programme of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and in pursuit of the Government Policy of ensuring a holistic education for all Ghanaians especially the youth.
This year’s Competition was on the topic” That the Youth do not Exhibit the Potentials to Build a Better Ghana “saw Achimota School represented by Mr. Samuel Kofi Painstil, and Ebenezer Kofi Ayi, Speaking for the Motion Whiles Mr. Mohammed Mutari and Stephen Nsiah who represented Prempeh College debunking the Motion.
Speaking against the motion, Prempeh College was of the view that the youth are capable of ensuring a better Ghana only when there are better environmental conditions to unearth their potential, stressing that it is the environment that changes the individual.
Achimota School, arguing for the motion however believed that the Better Ghana agenda can be easily promoted if the youth change their attitude in all spheres of their lives in a peaceful atmosphere.
In an address, the Minister of Education, Alex Tettey- Enyo, said the memory of the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah will not be complete without reference to his astute oratorical and debating skills and that it is with the hope to recapture the power of speech and delivery of Osagyefo that this year’s schools debate has been organised.
He believed that healthy debate among the schools will help to re-kindle sweet memories of Osagyefo, past leaders and role models whose efforts and achievements should open the window of hope for the youth to contribute to national development.
Achimota School who emerged as winners of the competition received a Certificate , 29 inch television set and Cash price of 800 Ghanaian cedis ,whiles Pempeh College placing Second of the completion took home a certificate, 29 inch television and 600 Ghanaian cedis.
Other participating schools who witnessed this year’s event included Labone and Ebenezer Senior High Schools with a call on Stakeholders in education to ensure that the programme cover more schools.
Some Students who spoke exclusively to the Information Services Department (ISD) expressed satisfaction with this year’s programme and commended the organisers. |
